Single Storey Extensions

Single storey extensions are a fantastic option for adding space and light to your home. They can give you that ‘new house’ feeling without the cost and hassle of actually moving, and provide the opportunity to get your design head on and create your dream living space. 

The style of single storey extension that is best for you depends greatly on your property. Terraced homes are perfect for side return extensions, while those living in detached or semi-detached properties may prefer rear or wraparound extensions. Open-plan  single storey extensions have become extremely desirable in the past few years for their sleek, modern finishes and the fact that they flood the entire lower floor with natural light. There is also the option to have a single storey extension consisting of smaller, separate areas, something which lends itself to those working from home offices or who prefer defined rooms.

Apart from the room itself, you will also be able to choose from a variety of roofing styles for your single storey extension. Pitched or flat roofs are the two most popular options. Flat roofs are the less costly of the 2, and allow for a trendy, modern finish in which it is easy to install skylights and roof lanterns. Pitched roofs are a little more costly, but give the extension more vertical space, and allow for more architectural features to be included, such as roof beams. They also tend to make rooms brighter than flat roofs do.

The answer to this question will depend on a lot of factors, most crucially the size of your extension. It is possible to design a single storey extension that can be built under Permitted Development, but is well worth familiarising yourself with the rules before you start.
